Wholesale .cloud renewal price to double

Registrants of .cloud domain names are in for a surprise when it’s time to renew them. The registry behind .cloud just notified its registrar partners that it is doubling the wholesale price of renewals from $7.50 to $15.00 beginning April 1, 2021. Registrars typically add a markup to the wholesale price. Oddly, it appears that the first-year price of .cloud domains has actually been higher than renewals until this change. The wholesale new registration cost had been $15.00, but in practice, people rarely paid this much due to promotions. For example, GoDaddy currently offers .cloud domains for $1.99 for the first year. .Cloud will remain less expensive than many other new top level domains. Still, I wonder if registrars need to change the wording they use in domain search results. Many registrars currently show the first year price and then “renews at” for the renewal cost. Based on what we’ve seen with new top level domains, this should probably read “Renews at X, unless the registry jacks up its prices.” NOTE:: This article  is copyright by domainnamewire.com and we are using it  for educational or Information purpose only

Ransomware Protection

What is Ransomware? Ransomware is a type of malware from cryptovirology that threatens to publish the victim’s data or perpetually block access to it unless a ransom is paid. While some simple ransomware may lock the system in a way that is not difficult for a knowledgeable person to reverse, more advanced malware uses a technique called cryptoviral extortion, in which it encrypts the victim’s files, making them inaccessible, and demands a ransom payment to decrypt them. In a properly implemented cryptoviral extortion attack, recovering the files without the decryption key is an intractable problem – and difficult to trace digital currencies such as Ukash or Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency are used for the ransoms, making tracing and prosecuting the perpetrators difficult. Ransomware attacks are typically carried out using a Trojan that is disguised as a legitimate file that the user is tricked into downloading or opening when it arrives as an email attachment. However, one high-profile example, the “WannaCry worm”, travelled automatically between computers without user interaction. The biggest ransom ever paid In 2017, the Korean web hosting firm Internet Nayana received the largest ransom demand ever (a whopping $1.14 million), which they also ended up paying. During their negotiations, some of their data was permanently deleted. To make up for the incident, Nayana offered free hosting for life and refunds to its affected customers. So, of course, besides the actual payment, the ransomware attack involved additional costs and reputational damage.   Riviera Beach City, Florida, USA :: Amount paid: $600,000 Allegedly, right after an employee clicked on a phishing email link received on May 29, hackers managed to infiltrate into the city’s network and locked it up. All of the city’s online systems went down, including email and even some phones, and on top of that, water utility pump stations were affected as well. As a result, payments could only be accepted in person or by mail (only in cash or by check) and communication was conducted by phone. The City Council unanimously agreed to pay the ransom. The requested amount was 65 bitcoins, the equivalent of nearly $600,000. More than $300,000 from the city’s insurance policy was used to pay the ransom. The payment was officially made merely a few weeks after Riviera Beach agreed to spend around $1 million to replace the infected computer equipment. Riviera Beach’s attack looked similar to what Jackson County experienced in March, so it seems they were yet another victim of the Ryuk ransomware strain.   Lake City, Florida, USA Amount paid: $500,000 A second city in Florida paralyzed by ransomware agreed to pay the ransom: 42 bitcoins ($500,000). Even though their IT staff disconnected the systems within ten minutes of the attack’s detection, the ransomware managed to infect their network almost entirely. The police and fire departments were not affected, as they were running on a separate network. The people who needed to pay their bills could only do it in cash or money orders and they received handwritten receipts. Cybercriminals reached out to the city’s insurance provider a week after the infection took place and the ransom payment of 42 bitcoins was negotiated. The money was paid from the city’s insurance. Over 100 years’ worth of records (ordinances, meeting minutes, resolutions, and City Council agendas) were encrypted for almost a month. A few weeks after the ransom was paid, they did not even recover all of their data. What’s more, Lake City’s information technology director was accused of failing to secure the network and not recovering the data quickly enough and eventually lost his job. Lake City was another victim of the Ryuk ransomware strain. Multi-year Subscription SSL

Great news to the SSL market! Now most SSL certificates are available for Multi-year Subscription Plans. For security reasons, your certificate will initially be issued with a maximum of 13-months validity. Prior to the expiration, we will contact you to replace your certificate for another maximum duration certificate. You can reissue your certificate at any time and as many times as you like. No more lost days or weeks on single year certificates trying to time a new purchase and re-submission. Industry changes At the CA/Browser (CA/B) Forum in Bratislava, Slovakia, Apple announced that beginning Sept. 1, newly issued publicly trusted TLS certificates are valid for no longer than 398 days. This followed a long history of the CA/B Forum community working to reduce certificate lifetimes and improve security while balancing the needs of business owners in transitioning to shorter validity certificates. Check the official statement and history. When changes applies? Sectigo – starting at 19th August 2020 GoGetSSL – starting at 19th August 2020 DigiCert – starting at 27th August 2020 All other CAs – starting at 1st September 2020. What is the TLS/SSL Multi-year Plan? To help your customers embrace the benefits of shorter certificate lifetimes and make certificate management even easier, GoGetSSL is offering Multi-year Plan TLS/SSL certificates. This new type of multi-year coverage is a time-efficient and cost-effective way to help your customers improve their security by further reducing certificate outages and the hassle of managing shorter certificate lifecycles. As browsers are mandating one-year certificate lifetimes, the Multi-year Plan coupled with automation tools saves you time—and money. Your customers can lock in longer coverage terms provided by the Multi-year Plan, while your cost goes down relative to the longer term lengths you sell. How does it work? When your customer purchases a TLS/SSL certificate with the Multi-year Plan, they’ll receive the initial certificate, valid for up to one year, and entitlement to unlimited certificate reissues during the order period—up to six years. We will need to routinely revalidate customer organizations and domains annually throughout the lifetime of the Multi-year Plan. We would start sending replacement notifications before 30-21-14-7-3-1 days. The SSL will be replaced automatically using the same CSR before 3-days of expiration if users do not replace SSL on their own. Reissued SSL will be sent to the email. Example of SSL subscription There are four different dates now available for all multi-year SSL certificates. Subscription starts the date when the first SSL was issued Subscription ends the date when subscription ends and new orders needs to be created Valid From the date when current active SSL was issued on Valid Till the date when SSL needs to be replaced in order to get new SSL for another 13-months Why should partners offer the TLS Multi-year Plan? When the Multi-Year Plan is combined with automation, your customers can minimize the risk of human error when managing shorter certificate lifecycles. With automation, you can automatically provision and reinstall certificates, and in most environments replace the CSR. Also, customers can easily adapt to any potential certificate lifetime reductions imposed by the industry in the future. Certificate renewals no longer require additional order periods added to the new certificate, because there is no more lost purchase period. The customer can get a new certificate from the day they need the certificate, until the day they want it to expire, within the service period. Due to Baseline Requirements of the CA/Browser Forum, re-validation is necessary at certain certificate intervals to maintain compliance. Multi-year Plan helps your customers efficiently embrace the security benefits of shortened certificate lifecycles and ensures they remain loyal to your brand for many years. Although certificate validation must be renewed annually, certificates can be replaced daily to improve the security posture of any organization. Benefits of the Multi-year Plan for you and your customers Minimized risk of compromised certificates; Minimizes the risk of using weak keys (example SHA1); Ensures yearly validation of identity to prevent potential fraud and spoofing; Easier management of certificates with automation; Using the Multi-year Plan provides more billing flexibility for you with your customers, and allows you to secure more revenue up front, while locking in your customers for longer terms; Improve your average selling price (ASP) on certificate deals by selling longer term lengths. Talking points to promote the Multi-year Plan Streamlined: Remove the hassle of annual billing by taking advantage of the Multi-year Plan. Customizable: Secure your site with coverage for longer periods of time. Secure: The Multi-year Plan allows you to embrace the best practice of shorter TLS certificate lifecycles by minimizing the risk of compromised certificates and changing out weak keys regularly, thus improving the security posture of your web pages. Future-proof: By taking advantage of Multi-year Plan options you also protect yourself from further reduction to certificate lifecycles imposed by the industry.

How to install an SSL certificate in DirectAdmin

After the certificate is issued and sent to you from the Certificate Authority, you can proceed with the certificate installation. Log in to your DirectAdmin panel with User access. Click on SSL Certificates in the Advanced Features section. Tick the ‘Paste a pre-generated certificate and key’ radio button. In the field below, paste your Private Key that was generated along with the CSR code and the certificate that you received from the Certificate Authority right after the RSA key from the new line. If the private key is already filled in, simply copy your certificate including —–BEGIN CERTIFICATE—– and —–END CERTIFICATE—– tags and paste it below the key. Once you have both codes in, click Save. For the certificate to be trusted in all web browsers, you also need to install a CA certificate chain (CA Bundle) you received from the Certificate Authority. You can also download the CA chain file in your account with us or find the appropriate file on this page. To upload a CA bundle file, click on the link ‘Click Here to paste a CA Root Certificate’. Copy all the certificates from the CA bundle file, paste them into the Certificate Authority SSL Certificate field, check the box Use a CA Cert and click Save.   Make sure that the SSL connection is enabled for this domain. The corresponding confirmation is available at the top of the SSL Certificates page. If SSL is disabled, you can click on the link ‘You can enable it here’, check the box Secure SSL and press Save.

How to generate a CSR code in DirectAdmin

To generate the certificate request using DirectAdmin control panel, please follow the steps below: 1. Log in to your DirectAdmin panel. If you are logged as Admin, please choose User Level access in the upper right corner of the screen. 2. Select SSL Certificates from the Advanced Features section. 3. Click on the Create A Certificate Request radio button and fill in the required details. The provided information will be provided in the CSR code to the Certificate Authority. Two-letter Country Code;State/Province;City;Company;Company Division;Common Name – a fully qualified domain name you want to secure with an SSL certificate;E-mail;Key Size (bits), the modern size is 2048 bits least;Certificate Type – the hashing algorithm of the CSR code. Note: The selected hashing algorithm will not influence the issued certificate. Starting from November 6, 2014 all our certificates are issued with SHA-2 hashing algorithm by default. The last two parameters may be lacking, depending on the version of the DirectAdmin panel. After all the details are filled in, click Save at the bottom of the page. 4. After that, DirectAdmin will show the CSR code and the private key. You can use the CSR code to activate your SSL certificate. Please copy it with the header and footer —–BEGIN/END CERTIFICATE REQUEST—–. The private key will be needed for the installation of the issued certificate. Please make sure you backed it up in a separate file because after you close the page, the private key will not be available anymore. If the page shows you only the Certificate request, do not worry – the private key is already copied to the SSL installation page. After you receive the issued certificate, you can use the following guide for the certificate installation.
