Microsoft shares fix for Outlook asking to reopen closed windows

Microsoft is investigating an issue causing Outlook Desktop to unexpectedly ask users to restore windows closed during a previous session. Outlook for Microsoft 365 users on affected systems see dialogs with the “Outlook closed while you had items open. Reopen those items from your last session?” prompt. With Office perpetual versions, in most instances, the Outlook options will not display the feature causing this issue (named “Ask me if I want to restore previous items”), rendering users unable to configure it through the user interface. The option to automatically restore windows in Outlook is enabled by default and rolled out to Microsoft 365 subscribers using Outlook for Windows on Beta Channel Version 2006 (Build 13006.20002) three years ago, in June 2020. “Whether Outlook closed due to a crash, a system update, or when you explicitly closed it, you’ll now be asked if you want to reopen any windows that were previously open,” Microsoft describes the feature. “Clicking Yes will restore email drafts, email windows, meetings, and appointment windows that were open.” You may encounter this behavior when using certain Office perpetual retail SKUs like Microsoft Office Professional Plus and Office Home and Business, specifically from Version 2306 (Build 16529.20154) onwards. Workaround available While the Outlook Team is still investigating the bug, Redmond also provides impacted customers with a temporary fix to work around the issue and turn off the feature to get rid of the window restoration prompts and tell Outlook never to reopen previous items. In situations where the feature is absent from Outlook’s options, but users wish to deactivate it, they can set a registry key for this purpose. However, it is essential to note that since the feature intermittently appears and disappears, this registry key may not offer a permanent solution and may not entirely prevent the unexpected prompts from reappearing. The procedure required to implement the workaround includes the following steps: Start Registry Editor. Create or edit the following DWORD registry value at the specified location. Subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\PreferencesDWORD: Reopen Windows OptionValue: 1 Exit Registry Editor. Restart Outlook. The Outlook Team recently provided temporary fixes for issues causing Outlook to block some hyperlinks from opening after installing July’s Microsoft Office security updates and triggering significant delays when saving attachments to network shares. It also shared a workaround for a bug causing Outlook slow starts and freezes for Microsoft 365 customers in June. Apple rejects new name ‘X’ for Twitter iOS app because… rules

Mr. Musk may have successfully pushed Twitter’s new name and logo, ‘X’, and even made the vanity domain x.com redirect to the social media website, but that’s not to say, the Mathematical double-struck letter will fit the bill everywhere. Turns out, Apple’s App Store can’t accept the new name for Twitter’s iOS app because of minimum character requirements. Apple App Store has now revised the name of ‘Twitter’ to ‘X,’ roughly two days after the publication of this piece. Twitter still  Twitter on App Store This week, both Google Play and Apple’s App Store pushed updated versions of the Twitter app respectively for Android and iOS users. The latest app version bears the ‘X’ logo, and in some cases, Twitter’s new name. Observed, for example, that Google Play store page for the Android app now bears the name ‘X’ not Twitter: The app, however, still shows up as “Twitter” among installed apps on an Android, and the application package (APK) ID remains com.twitter.android internally: This is in stark contrast to the latest version of Twitter’s iOS app, which unfortunately couldn’t be renamed to ‘X’ on the App Store—and it’s got to to with the minimum number of characters an iOS app name must have. “On iOS, the situation is distinct as Apple does not permit any app to have a single character as their app name,” data scientist and Next founder, Nick Sheriff pointed out. “Twitter was able to change the logo of their iOS app but not the name, since Apple requires app names to be at least 2 characters,” mocked San Francisco-based Erik Berlin. While iOS app names “can be up to 30 characters long,” they must be at least 2 characters in length, failing which the app name will be rejected by Apple: Some Apple users report seeing the ‘X’ app on their iPhone or iPad device after fetching the latest update, but the name restriction remains in effect on the App Store. “What about X and a space, either before or after?” software developer Yusuf Alp suggested a potential workaround in response to Berlin’s post. “He already has a company called SpaceX,” chuckled Berlin. Twitter’s rushed and inconsistent rebranding seems to be causing issues in other areas—legal and technical, as well. The app’s icon change to ‘X’ triggered security alerts for Microsoft Edge users this week. Internet content filters in some regions, like Indonesia, also started blocking the ‘x.com’ website, mistaking it for adult content. Global trends and customer feature requirements are constantly analysed and ideas are implemented. DirectAdmin takes pride in stability, security, and rapid implementation of new technologies. DirectAdmin has been in continuous development since 2003. DirectAdmin provides three levels of access: administrator level, resource level, and user level. Typically, web hosting customers have access to User Features only, reseller customers have access to Reseller Features and User Features, and administrators have access to all three levels. DirectAdmin for administrators Create / edit administrators and Vendors – Administrators can create, modify, and delete distributors (Resellers) or users. Reseller packages – Administrators can create predefined account packages. When creating accounts, the administrator simply selects the package rather than manually setting up each account. Show all users – This feature allows administrators to quickly view each account on the system and sort this list in different ways. DNS administration – Allows administrators to create, modify, or delete DNS records on a server. IP manager – This is where administrators store user and customer IP addresses. Mail management – A tool to view mail alerts and their information. It includes tools to manage this information. System / service information – Administrators can view, block, start and restart services such as mail and ftp from this list. Overall performance statistics – This gives the administrator an accurate overview of the system’s usage. DNS collection – DirectAdmin communicates with other DirectAdmin software and automatically transfers DNS data between them. You also have the option to check another server for the domain to avoid allowing duplicate domains on the DA network. Directadmin spam combat tools – DirectAdmin provides a variety of anti-spam tools such as RSpamd and SpamAssassin. Licence renewal – Administrators can view the license status from this list and download the latest securities and DirectAdmin software updates. System administrator backup – Generates and restores all users and clients. Attachments can be stored locally or sent via FTP. Nomination events allow you to hold daily, weekly, or monthly referrals. DirectAdmin for resellers Create / list / edit accounts – Quickly and easily create, list, edit, and delete accounts. User account – Customers can use this feature to create a defined account. When creating an account, customers simply select a collection rather than manually configure each account feature. Buyer statistics – Buyers get all views. Customers can also share the data with the user to quickly assess the whole situation. Send messages to all users – Customers can use DirectAdmins integrated ticket support system to quickly send messages to all customers. Import / manage projects – This menu feature allows customers to import and use new projects with the click of a button. FTP management – Users can create FTP accounts and set directory permissions for each account. Anonymous FTP is supported. DNS menu – Users can add and remove records, change MX settings, and do anything related to DNS. Statistics menu – Users have the statistics available to their accounts. Success options with a Webalizer are also included. Subdomain menu – Allows users to list, create, delete, and remove subdomain statistics. File manager – FTP is very flexible and fast. It contains all the features you need to build and manage your website. MySQL database – Users can create, edit and delete MySQL databases from this list. Website backup – This powerful tool allows users to back up and restore what they need. For example, your account data. Error pages – Users can create messages with custom versions with 401, 403, 404, and 500 error codes. Password protection – Users can Protect folders with their username and password. PHP publisher – Allows the client to select the version of PHP that links to the php extension. Advanced tools – Users can enter SSL certificates, view sender information and enter Perl components, configure cron jobs, MIME types, Apache controllers, enable database scripts and local markers. Like the payment control panel and license application, DirectAdmin is one of the best options you will find. You need a paid control panel (which most hosting companies do) because a free control panel does not provide the security and features you need for most purposes. This is one of the easiest control panels to use with access to email, administration options, file managers and much more. When you log in, everything is displayed on a single screen. It’s easy to find what you’re looking for in your administrative area. DirectAdmin general features Integrated ticket support system – With DirectAdmins integrated ticket support system, you can provide the best customer services without any issues, you can also configure DirectAdmin with email support requests so you don’t lose them. Plugins support the Administrator, Client and User levels. Live update – Administrators can click the License / Update button to see the status of their licenses and status. No need to manually remove, uninstall and install, DirectAdmin automatically performs updates. All customisation – DirectAdmin is designed to fit your business. You can modify all aspects

Outlook.com hit by outages as hacktivists claim DDoS attacks

Outlook.com is suffering a series of outages today after being down multiple times yesterday, with hacktivists known as Anonymous Sudan claiming to perform DDoS attacks on the service. This outage follows two major outages yesterday, creating widespread disruptions for global Outlook users, preventing users worldwide from reliably accessing or sending email and using the mobile Outlook app. Outlook users have taken to Twitter to complain about the spotty email service, stating that it is affecting their productivity. Microsoft says these outages are caused by a technical issue, posting to Twitter a series of updates switching between saying they mitigated the issues and saying that the problem is happening again.  “We’ve identified that the impact has started again, and we’re applying further mitigation,” tweeted Microsoft. “Telemetry indicates a reduction in impact relative to earlier iterations due to previously applied mitigations. Further details about the workstreams are in the admin center via MO572252.” Group claims to DDoS Microsoft Outlook While Microsoft claims technical issues cause the outages, a group known as Anonymous Sudan is claiming to be behind them, warning that they are performing DDoS attacks on Microsoft to protest the US getting involved in Sudanese internal affairs. “We can target any US company we want. Americans, do not blame us, blame your government for thinking about intervening in Sudanese internal affairs. We will continue to target large US companies, government and infrastructure,” Anonymous Sudan posted to their Telegram channel yesterday. “We hope you enjoyed it, Microsoft” Since then, the group has been taunting Microsoft in statements about the repeated DDoS attacks on Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft 365 services. “Microsoft, today we played football with your services. Let’s play a fun game. The fate of your services, which is used by hundreds of millions of people everyday, is under our dominion and choice,” Anonymous Sudan posted to their Telegram channel. “You have failed to repel the attack which has continued for hours, so how about you pay us 1,000,000 USD and we teach your cyber-security experts how to repel the attack and we stop the attack from our end?” While these claims remain unverified, the service has been sluggish and plagued by a series of outages over the past 24 hours. Contacted Microsoft about Anonymous Sudan’s claims, but a response was not immediately available. Microsoft 365 hit by new outage causing connectivity issues

Microsoft is investigating service issues preventing users from accessing their Microsoft 365 accounts and blocking access to installed apps. The company confirmed the issue in a tweet shared via the Microsoft 365 Status account and pointed admins to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for more details. “We’re investigating an issue affecting access to https://msft.it/6016gbJ06 and Microsoft 365 apps,” the company said. Affected customers report experiencing issues accessing their Outlook mailboxes and an inability to connect to the Microsoft 365 servers. “We received reports that this impact manifested for users primarily in the North America, Poland, and United Kingdom regions, though users in other regions also may have been affected,” the company said in the MO559201 alert. Last month, another Microsoft 365 outage caused Exchange Online connectivity issues for users in North America. In March, one more service outage blocked Exchange Online customers worldwide from sending and receiving emails or accessing their mailboxes. A massive outage also hit Microsoft 365 in January, an incident caused by router packet forwarding issues within Microsoft’s Wide Area Network (WAN) after a faulty router IP address update.

Twitter outage logs you out and won’t let you back in

A Twitter outage has logged many users out of the website and prevents them from logging back into the site. At approximately 3:45 PM ET, Twitter users worldwide reported they were suddenly logged out of the desktop website, with thousands reporting issues on DownDetector. When attempting to log back into the site, the logins would appear to work, but the site would redirect you to the logout URL.   This appears to primarily be affecting users on Google Chrome and Chromebook, with my account logged out in Chrome but not in Mozilla Firefox. After attempting to log back into Twitter with Google Chrome a second time, the site prompted me for additional information, stating that the account had unusual activity. Once I entered that information, I could log in to the account again. This does not appear to be the same for other people affected by the repeated cycle of login and logouts. No issues are listed on Twitter’s status page or support account, so we will likely have to wait for the outage to resolve itself. The issues resolved without any updates from Twitter on the cause. New Microsoft 365 outage causes Exchange Online connectivity issues

Microsoft is investigating ongoing Microsoft 365 issues preventing some Exchange Online customers from accessing their mailboxes. “We’ve identified an issue affecting Exchange Online connectivity for users in North America and are investigating further,” the company tweeted earlier. “More details can be found in the Microsoft 365 admin center under EX546390.” According to outage monitoring platform Downdetector, thousands of Microsoft 365 report experiencing server connection and login issues, as well as when accessing their Outlook mailboxes. Some customers see errors when trying to log into their accounts, while others are caught in a sign-in loop where they’re asked to enter their passwords.  Microsoft says these Exchange Online connectivity problems only affect North American users. While the company added that more info on this outage can be in the Microsoft 365 admin center under EX546390, the advisory only says that Microsoft is “looking into a potential problem” and the “potential end-user impact.” Last month, another outage blocked Exchange Online customers worldwide from accessing their mailboxes and sending or receiving emails. Yesterday, Microsoft addressed more Microsoft 365 issues preventing some users from searching assets across multiple services, including but not limited to Outlook on the Web, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook desktop clients. Multiple Microsoft 365 services were taken down last week by another outage, blocking customers worldwide from signing into their accounts and seeing their web apps. A massive outage also hit Microsoft 365 in January after router packet forwarding issues within Microsoft’s Wide Area Network (WAN) were inadvertently triggered by a router IP address update. This is a developing story …
